Yesterday, I blew your head of the 85-year-old Mexican great-grandmother who lives not far away to my office here in Dallas...and reinforced in my opinion the need for being out.
Since I moved my PR firm in a cottage inside the gentrifying Bishop Arts District, I've talked to her on the chain link fence no less than once or twice 7 days. She knows my children and our (late) dogs. My children know her and love her dachshund, Red. I understand about her parents immigrating to the U.S.A. resulting in her four grown children. The conversations are neighborly sidewalk chats -- nothing particularly "deep" about them, but always enjoyable.
For reasons uknown, while I used to be swinging by the office using the kids to perform something I'd forgotten, she asked about my spouse. I shared with her I'm gay and possess a husband. She asked "Can be your wife gay too?" (LOL!)
I told her i always lack a wife, and she asked confusedly, "Why did they let people like you have kids?" I shared with her "Simply because they needed homes and might not have a family group otherwise."
She verbally stumbled a trifle and said some things I selected to never hear -- old people talk of modern social issues ("you people"), that i took inside the kind spirit and positive aim of her comments, not actual words spoken.
Finally she said, "I do believe I favor you more now than I did before. You cannot control what you are, only that which you choose to do, and that i like what you are doing using these kids."
I simply said "Many thanks," after which it was required to pretend your kids needed my attention to get a minute to hold myself together.
That moment is exactly why I live my well being so matter-of-factly and openly.
